A trip to Key West can begin with a drive across the Overseas Highway, a flight into Key West International Airport or a ferry ride from Southwest Florida. Starting November 27, 2026, travelers from South Florida will have another option: scheduled flights between Fort Lauderdale and Key West with Tropic Ocean Airways.
The new service gives visitors a direct way to reach the island, with views of the Florida Keys along the way. It can work well for a weekend getaway, a longer stay or a trip where you’d rather spend more of the day in Key West and less time getting there.
New Fort Lauderdale to Key West flights
Tropic Ocean Airways will operate scheduled flights Thursday through Sunday between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Key West International Airport (EYW). Flights depart from Sheltair at FLL and arrive at Signature Aviation at EYW. The flight takes about an hour, and one-way fares start at $199 per person.
The route uses private terminals at both airports. Guests can arrive 30 minutes before departure, and complimentary parking is available in Fort Lauderdale. Each passenger may bring 50 pounds of luggage. Pets are welcome, and two pilots are aboard every flight.
You can book your departure and return flights for different dates, which makes it easier to plan a long weekend or stay a few extra days. Check FlyTropic.com for current schedules, fares and availability.
Which way should you travel to Key West?
The best way to get to Key West depends on where you’re starting and what you want from the journey. Some travelers want to arrive quickly. Others would rather make the drive part of the trip and stop along the way.
Fly directly into Key West
Key West International Airport is on the island, so flying into EYW puts you close to your stay. Taxis, rideshare services, shuttles and rental cars are among the available ground transportation options. Flight routes and connections depend on your departure city and travel dates, so check current schedules when planning.
For travelers coming from South Florida, Tropic Ocean Airways’ new Fort Lauderdale route adds another direct option. The private terminal experience, short arrival window and included parking may be especially convenient for a shorter visit.
Drive the Overseas Highway
Driving to Key West gives you the freedom to explore the Florida Keys at your own pace. The Overseas Highway crosses 42 bridges and connects communities throughout the island chain. You can make stops along the way or take the drive in one stretch, depending on your plans. Traffic can build during busy travel periods, so leave extra time in your schedule.
A car can be useful if you plan to visit several parts of the Keys. If most of your time will be spent in Key West, consider whether you’ll need one once you arrive; taxis, rideshare and other local options are available around the island.
Take the ferry from Southwest Florida
Visitors traveling from Southwest Florida can also look into passenger ferry service to Key West. Key West Express serves the island from Southwest Florida. Check its current departure locations and schedule before booking.
Make Casa Marina your Key West home base
Once you arrive at Key West International Airport, local ground transportation can bring you to Casa Marina. The resort’s oceanfront setting offers a place to settle in and shift from travel day to a few days by the water. First opened in 1920, Casa Marina pairs its storied Key West character with room to make the stay your own.
Spend the morning on the resort’s private beach, take a swim in either of the two oceanfront pools, or leave time for a cabana and a slower afternoon. When you’re ready to explore, Key West is yours to discover. And when you return, the beach and pools are right there waiting.
Dining can be part of the stay, too. Start the day at Flagler’s, settle in for coastal Baja-Med fare at Dorada, or stop by the Canary Room for a cocktail. With Tropic Ocean Airways offering the option to choose separate departure and return dates, you can plan a quick weekend at Casa Marina or stay on the island a little longer.
Fantasy Fest preview flights
Tropic Ocean Airways also has special flights scheduled for Fantasy Fest on October 22, 23 and 25, 2026. Visit FlyTropic.com for availability and booking details.
